Questions and Answers

Q. What are the differences between “primary sources” and “secondary sources” on JSTOR?

On JSTOR the category “academic content” in the refine results sidebar contains secondary sources. This is generally scholarly content in the form of journal articles, books chapters and research reports provided by publishers and research institutes. The category “primary sources” is reserved for content provided by contributing archives, museums, , and other collections.  The types of content include historical publications, theses and dissertations, images, videos, serials, oral histories, diaries, letters, postcards and other documents.

 

Q. I'm an academic librarian who creates library exhibits. Would I be able to use JSTOR images on exhibit posters for our in-library exhibits (i.e., would that be considered an educational use)?

Please review Getting Permissions for Content on JSTOR on support.jstor.org In addition, check the metadata of the images in question for the contact information for the owner of the image. 

 

Q. Is it possible to filter a search according to the Creative Commons license?

The best way to find the open and free image content on JSTOR is to search by Collections under the Browse menu on any page and then choose Open Collections | JSTOR. See also Open and free content on JSTOR
